In 2016, Kartemquin Films celebrated 50 years of promoting democratic debate through documentary filmmaking. Studio Junglecat was hired to develop an exhibition and design a corresponding book to serve as both a catalog and history of this scrappy Chicago outfit. The book's cover includes stills from all 55 films the organization has produced as a nod toward a history bursting with provocative images. The hand-glued offset cover wrap symbolizes Kartemquin's enveloping of all this diverse and discursive image-making. Gatefold section pages fold out to reveal case studies of particular films that have impacted key social themes Katemquin has pursued. The book also uses short page section dividers to differentiate content areas: the organization's history as told via text and images from the exhibition, event info for the 50th anniversary gala (it was quite a party!), and a collection of Notes from Friends, including letters of support from a range of political and media personalities.
