I was asked to design a pattern as a backdrop for the International Interior Design Association Photobash. This pattern incorporates Korean and English letterforms, using a process of “Chicago” phonetically spelled out in Korean, then back to English using the South Korean government’s romanization system. This piece explores the process of romanization and systems of romanization as a visual analogy of translation, as well as the dynamics of foreground and background, positive and negative spaces.
