The Smithville Papers are a series of prints that correspond to one of the eighty-four selections contained in Harry Smith’s storied Anthology of American Folk Music. This is the fourteenth print in the series, inspired by the 1927 recording of “My Name is John Johanna” by Kelly Harrell & the Virginia String Band. The song details the misfortunes of a desperate wandering man who is lured by the promise of work to journey by train to Arkansas where he finds only hardship and starvation. The print was constructed from a combination of wood type, wood rules, and laser-cut blocks. All passes were printed on a Vandercook SP-20 proof press.
