One Island to Another is the first print use of Caeli, a speculative variable font. The poster typesets the poem "Rise" by Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner and Aka Niviâna, two indigenous poets—one from the Marshall Islands and another from Greenland— who meet at the source of our rising seas to share a moment of solidarity and artistry. The poster mixes the text with stills from the video the poets created.
Atop the printed matter sit red letters cast in ice from original letterform molds. In the beginning, the poster and letterforms are clear. Over time, the letterforms melt to room temperature. Through the process, the red letterforms turn to water and overlap, muddy, and distort the printed surface underneath, ultimately consuming the work in a metaphor akin to the climate message of the poem.
