Jacobs & Schroeder / The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots

This book is the first time that narrative of John Jacobs Swanson was published in the United States since it first appeared in an Australian newspaper in 1855. It’s a first-hand account of American slavery and critique of both the documents and power structures that made slavery possible. I wanted Jacobs words to dominate the design, so I used a fully typography approach. I chose two primary typefaces to represent his story: the first is Adobe Caslon, a modern update to the Caslons that were commonly used in early modern American printing, including the first printed copies of the Declaration of Independence. The second is the display font Bayard, designed Trés Seals and based on lettering used for protest signs in the continuing fight for civil rights during the 20th century.
