re:connections brings together CalArt’s 2021 graduated MFA cohort in Art, Photography & Media, and Art & Technology. The participating artists reflect on their creative practice in the past two years—before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The site design and exhibition identity conceptualize Re:connections as an expression of expansion. The artistic direction is particularly inspired by the colon within the title, a punctuation mark that often appends elements of language—either changing meanings entirely or amplifying the original meaning. Designed with ambiguity in mind, the typography of the landing page expands and contracts using a variable font, cycling through legibility and illegibility. The index of works also acts as a navigational tool, with each number revealing a corresponding image upon hover and representing a unique artist.
