Stockyard Institute: 25 Years of Art and Radical Pedagogy presents the first comprehensive survey of the pioneering socially engaged practice of Chicago-based artist Jim Duignan and his ongoing Stockyard Institute project. Produced to accompany the retrospective exhibition of Stockyard Institute at DePaul Art Museum in 2021, this fully illustrated catalog provides important documentation and historical context for one of the most significant social practice projects in the world of contemporary art. The book’s design encourages wandering between essay, interviews, and archival objects, while visually playing with the artist’s extensive archive of references from the Situationists International to vintage automobile references and how to manuals.
The book is bound layflat with shifting paper stocks and metallic and neon inks to provide visceral material shifts that compliment the conceptual and collaborative diversity of the Stockyard Institute’s history. The book’s cover allows the artist to include printed ephemera visible through a die cut window helping the book’s cover to adapt to new projects and programming over time.
