State Phobia and Civil Society

Cover design for a sociology book about Michel Foucault’s philosophy and the necessity of the state in political and social analysis. We embraced the visual element of a grid as a symbol for the state. The image is a photograph of a physical, three-dimensional sculpture made out of paper that was cut and folded in opposing directions to create a gridded surface with the illusion of layers being peeled away. The final cover is a metaphor for the act of examining what lies behind the facade of the state. Client: Stanford University Press.
