Book cover design for an anthology of writings from an experimental journal in the 1960s-70s. “Souffles-Anfas” was one of the most influential literary, cultural, and political reviews to emerge in postcolonial North Africa. Our original illustration combines mechanical lines output by a plotter with hand-brushed sumi ink. The juxtaposition of the organic brush strokes with the precise vector lines creates an interesting material interaction that is a metaphor for the content of the book. The final cover conveys the tension and energy surrounding the journal at the time. Published by Stanford University Press in 2015.
Translation: “Souffles-Anfas” is the original title of the experimental Moroccan Journal from the 1960s-70s that this book anthologizes. The French and Arabic words translate to “breaths.”
