This book titled <Seoul Welcomes You> was designed when we are invited as designers to Typojanchi 2015: The 4th International Typography Biennale, held under the theme “City & Typography”. Various designers coming differently from 6 teams in total published the book by making the cooperative plan while participating in as the author and artist respectively under the common theme, <Seoul Welcomes You> during Typojanchi 2015.
The book was structured from the cover page to the last page in the order of the schedule from a visit to Seoul by a foreigner visitor and to the time when the person comes back to his/her country. The Chapter 1 of the book starts with <Today’s Arrivals> that can be seen at Incheon International Airport as a representative gate of Seoul. The Chapter 2 shows the process moving from the airport to a hotel by using <Public Transportation Guide>. The Chapter 3 shows <City Welcomes You>. The Chapter 4 does <Virtual & Actual>. The Chapter 5 does <How Do You like Seoul>. The Chapter 6 does <Consumption>. The Chapter 7 does <Welcomer>. The Chapter 8 does <Plastic Welcomer>. And the Chapter 9 does <F13 FF> describing the departure from Korea finally. The cover page of this book used the <Entry & Departure Declaration Form> being used at the Incheon International Airport as the graphic motive. sign that can be seen at a boundary between the Incheon International Airport and Seoul.
For a stranger who travels cities, the city talks with letters and welcomes with typography. The word welcome exceeds typography and is more symbolic and live as a cognitive symbol in all cities. From the very beginning moment to arrive in a city, to the last minute when one leaves, these illusive letters appear differently in every moment but stay together all the time as if they were shadows of visitors.
“Welcome/Welcome/Welcome/Welcome/Welcome/Welcome/Welcome…Welcome!” The subject of welcome is a city and the object of it would be a visitor of that city. We would like to document and experiment on the typography’s action which controls humans in society, and possibilities, whether the typography can intervene the speaking way instead of a city. Document the conventional welcome impressions and the ways for the unspecified masses which is like the uncontrollable wrinkles on a forehead in the city’s public space. Moreover, we would love to experiment and deliver the planned welcome experience in various ways for the each person in the hotel, a private space.
